Declining meat prices help
lower food costs for consumers

(Natural Resources Conservation Services)
   Falling meat prices are a contributing factor to lower food prices for consumers, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

   Retail food prices decreased for the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation Marketbasket Survey.

   The survey, which includes Nebraska, shows that the total cost of 16 basic grocery items was $48.19, down about 1 percent or 49 cents from the third quarter of 2008.
